Our Mandarin Vocabulary and the Night Market

Ni Hao (hello)

If you add 'ma' it means ' How are you today?'

When you ask the Chinese for anything the standard english answer is 'No problem' . No problem translates in Mandarin to 'mei wen ti'  We are trying to use the phrase once in a while, you wouldn't think three little words would be so hard to remember.

In our first few days in China Sid learned the phrase 'Bīngzhèn píjiǔ'.  It means cold beer.

On our first night in Beijing we pass by the first McDonalds to open in China in 1992.

 - there are now over 300 of them in China

We continue to the Night Market on WangFujing Street.  LiNa advised us not to try anything here.

I remember the pictures that went around at the time of the Beijing Olympics and I dismissed them as being unlikely to be real.

I see now they were real.  Fresh snake on a stick anyone?

Glazed crickets?

Spiders maybe?

The brown things on our back left are silk worm cocoons for your dining pleasure

It wasn't all strange stuff -  this looked quite tasty!

I must add that I didn't see anyone actually eating any of the above tasty treats - Thank goodness!
